GREEN FILMMAKING

This Project's Main Goals
1. Connect to other filmmakers
Create a community of filmmakers and industry collegues who care about being sustainable in their production process.
2. Build Awareness about being Carbon Conscious
Educate the film community in India about what it means to be carbon conscious and practicalways to go about doing it.
3. Join a Network for sharing B-roll
Create a network of filmmakers around the world who can share broll to help reduce carbon footprints of future films and impact series, thus helping the industry reach its carbon reduction goals.

Why is Green Film Making important?
-
- Every industry needs to become more sustainable to help us stay below the 1.5-degree rise in temperature.
-
- The film industry can be incredibly carbon-intensive.
-
- Inspires innovative thinking for future filmmakers.
-
- Makes the message of the film all the sweeter knowing it did it’s best to consider it’s environmental impact.
- Creates a community of learning.

Turtle Walker’s Carbon Footprint
We used websites like myclimate.org and carbonfootprint.com to calculate our carbon footprint manually. Although this may not be one hundred percent accurate, it did give us a general sense and pushed us to be cautious of the film’s carbon impact.

Free the Footage
“In an effort to connect with other filmmakers and build awareness on the need for greener filmmaking practices, we worked with Tom Mustill of Gripping Films to create “Free the footage” a short film, that took just one green filmmaking principle and made it into a call to action. We hope to inspire people to think about what all could be possible if we were more generous with our extra b-roll, how many more stories or films could be made. We debuted the film at the Jackson Wild Summit in Austria in 2022 on a panel discussion and in a workshop that led to a breakout discussion on the need for an international Accord like ECCA.”
“After our workshop in Jackson Wild in 2022, we joined ECCA as an Assembly Member and Committee Member, with the hopes that we could help support the development of this important international Accord.”
Entertainment & Culture for Climate Action

What is ECCA?
Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action (ECCA) is a global collaborative initiative to unite the cultural sector on shared climate goals and solutions. Initially conceived by the President of the UN General Assembly, ECCA has brought together stakeholders in the film and television sector and will be gradually expanding to include all entertainment and culture including theater, music, performing arts and visual arts.
ECCA is currently comprised of
- +430 General Assembly Members
- +220 Organizations & Stakeholders
- +57 Countries Represented
IMPACT RESULTS ON GREEN FILM MAKING
Created a report on the current carbon footprint of our film. We will continue to add in the details as we premier the film and screen it at various film festivals around the world.
Jackson Wild connected us with Samuel Rubin and Heather Fipps, the cofounders of the Hollywood Climate Summit. The UNFCCC recruited these two to help create an international accord on greening the film and television industry. Together, we codesigned and cohosted a working session on what should be included in such an Accord at the Jackson Wild Summit in Austria in 2022.
Emaho Films partnered with Open Planet to share original footage, which can be accessed for free use on their platform for non commercial films or at a fee for commercial films.
ENZA (Entertainment Net Zero Accord) after the COP27 has now expanded and evolved into the ECCA (Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action) it is a global collaborative initiative to unite the cultural sector on shared climate goals and solutions. This was conceived by the President of the UN General Assembly, it is starting with the film and television sector and will be gradually expanding to include all entertainment and culture including theatre, performing arts, music, and contemporary art.
